Breathing and support
Automate costal-diaphragmatic breathing and support, so the voice rides on steady air without tension in the neck or shoulders.
Session routine
15 min total- 1Posture and release: standing, feet hip-width apart; loosen shoulders and jaw with two yawns.2 min
- 2Low inhalations with one hand on the abdomen: expand belly and floating ribs without raising the shoulders.3 min
- 3Sustained 'sss' over the drone: inhale in the gaps and keep the airflow even through the whole note.4 min
- 4Lip trill over the drone: if it breaks, you need steadier support, not more force.4 min
- 5Cool down: two slow breaths and one soft decreasing 'sss'.2 min
Exercises
Timed sss
Inhale over 4 counts and hold an even 'sss'. Write down the seconds: the goal is to grow 2-3 s per week without squeezing the throat.
Book on the abdomen
Lying down with a book on your belly: raise it as you inhale and lower it slowly as you exhale. It is the physical reference of the diaphragm's movement.
Support with drone
Play the drone MIDI and hold an 'sss' or lip trill over each long note, inhaling only in the gaps.
Weekly progression
- Days 1-2: posture and low inhalations in front of the mirror only, no sound.
- Days 3-4: add the timed 'sss' and the lip trill over the drone.
- Days 5-7: use the app's Breathing module to pace the cycles and log your best sustain in the tuner.
Checklist
- My shoulders don't rise when I inhale.
- The 'sss' sounds even from start to finish, without jolts.
- The lip trill doesn't break through the whole drone note.
- My throat doesn't feel tight when I finish.
