Reading the staff
Read treble-clef notes fluently: place lines and spaces without counting from C every time, and sing what you read with note names.
Session routine
19 min total- 1Visual anchors: G on the 2nd line, middle C on the ledger line below, high C in the 3rd space.3 min
- 2Spoken reading: name the notes of the C scale on the staff, up and down, without singing.4 min
- 3Sung reading with the scale MIDI: note name and intonation at the same time.5 min
- 4Simple leaps: read and sing C-E, D-F, E-G (thirds) from the staff.4 min
- 5Wrap-up: write five notes from memory on a hand-drawn staff.3 min
Exercises
Scale sung with names
Play the C-scale MIDI and sing 'do-re-mi…' reading each note on the staff, not from memory.
Anchor flash
Cover the staff, reveal a random note and name it in under 3 seconds using the nearest anchor.
Reverse dictation
Play a key on the app's Piano and write the note on staff paper; check against the key label.
Weekly progression
- Days 1-3: anchors and spoken reading only; what matters is not counting from C, not speed.
- Days 4-5: sung reading with the MIDI and leaps of a third.
- Days 6-7: reverse dictation with the Piano and reading a simple melody you love.
Checklist
- I name any line or space in under 3 seconds.
- I sing the scale by reading it, not reciting it from memory.
- I recognize thirds (line to line, space to space) at a glance.
- I can write down the notes I sing.
