Phrasing and interpretation
Turn an in-tune song into an interpretation: decide breaths, dynamics, timing and intent on purpose, verse by verse.
Session routine
15 min total- 1Read the lyrics out loud, spoken, as if telling them to someone: hear where the stresses fall and where each idea ends.2 min
- 2Mark the map on paper: breaths, the key word of each line, and the dynamic level (1 to 3) of each section.3 min
- 3Three readings on a single line (held back, open, displaced in time) and keep one.4 min
- 4Full pass applying the map, with the climax marked at half voice so you don't tire out.4 min
- 5Listen back with the lyrics in front of you and note one single thing to change tomorrow.2 min
Exercises
Spoken line
Say the line as a sentence in conversation, no melody, and record it. Then sing it trying to keep the same stresses and the same intent.
Dynamic map 1-2-3
Assign a level from 1 to 3 to each section (verse 1 at 1, verse 2 at 2, chorus at 3) and stick to it even when tempted to rise early. Contrast is built by holding back.
The bare verse
Sing a verse with no ornament and no long vibrato at all. Then add one single ornament where it is most needed. If no clear spot appears, that verse doesn't need one.
Weekly progression
- Days 1-2: spoken reading and the paper map of one song only, without singing it through.
- Days 3-5: three readings per line and one full pass a day, always recording.
- Days 6-7: compare the day 1 recording with the day 6 one and lock in the final phrasing line by line.
Checklist
- I know where I breathe in every line without looking at the paper.
- Each section sits at a different dynamic level from the previous one.
- I can say in one sentence who I am singing each verse to.
- No ornament is there out of habit: each one has a reason.
