Vocal care: habits, fatigue and warning signs
Finish every session without burning or hoarseness, and know how to stop in time when your voice warns you.
Session routine
12 min total- 1Low breathing: sitting or lying down, breathe in through your nose, sending the air toward your belly, because that's how your body starts to let go. Then let it out slowly on a soft 's'. The app's Breathing tool can pace the counts for you.3 min
- 2Gentle humming in your middle range: mouth closed and teeth apart, so your jaw doesn't clench. Comfortable notes and low volume.3 min
- 3Straw or tube in water (singing through a tube whose end sits in a glass of water): short descending sirens (sliding without jumps from a comfortable note down toward your low notes), without pushing.3 min
- 4Silence and hydration: three minutes without talking, sipping water. Your voice also rests in silence.3 min
Exercises
Three-minute cool-down
When you finish singing, give your voice three minutes of winding down: one of soft descending humming, one of slides toward your low notes through the straw and one of voiced sighs at your speaking pitch. If your speaking voice comes out easily afterward, it worked. If you don't have a straw handy, do that minute with your lips almost closed, like a very small 'u'.
Load journal
Every night, write down how many hours you talked, how many you sang, whether there was background noise and how your voice woke up. You don't need clock-perfect precision: with a week of notes you'll see which days are hard on you and why.
Soft high-note check
At the end of the session, sing a comfortable high note just once, pianissimo, without pushing. If it comes out clean, all good. If it comes out breathy, cuts out or won't start, it's no drama: it's your voice asking for tomorrow to be a light day.
Weekly progression
- Days 1-2: keep the load journal for your speaking and singing voice, without changing anything yet. It's best to see what your real week looks like first.
- Days 3-4: add the three-minute cool-down at the end of every session, no exceptions, so it becomes a habit.
- Days 5-7: with the journal in hand, find the heaviest day of the week, the one that wears you down most. Plan the next one as a light day.
Checklist
- I don't clear my throat: I swallow or take a sip of water.
- I close every session with the cool-down.
- I know how much I talked and how much I sang today.
- My soft high note comes out clean when I finish.
